Basic advice - Tips Hot tubs and spa chemicals

We hope that with these tips and advice from us and all the information we have received from our customers, you will have an easy, relaxed and enjoyable spa experience.

  • When adding new water to your spa, start by measuring the pH balance. Always try to be in the range of 7.0 - 7.4.
  • Use chlorine as a disinfectant in your spa. Cheapest and best. If you are allergic to chlorine, use Bromine.
  • Do not underdose. Don't be afraid of the chlorine, be afraid of the bacteria. Always dose according to the instructions on the package.
  • Make sure you take a good shower before bathing and thoroughly rinse off any soap residue on your body and swimwear.
  • Feel free to use the Cleaner-Free Spa Filters to keep the water cleaner and make your spa care easier.
  • Change the water in the spa 3-4 times a year and at the same time clean the pipework with a special pipe cleaner.
  • When changing the water, it is also advisable to clean the spalocket and treat the vinyl against weather, wind and UV radiation.

Because...

High pH value results in poorer chlorine disinfection, skin irritation, lime precipitation and turbidity. Low pH value produces aggressive water that wears down equipment and causes irritation to eyes and mucous membranes.

Chlorine:
Most effective and cheapest. Most common is to use tablets before/after bathing. Depending on how much you bathe, you shock-chlorinate instead of the tablets after bathing, every two or three weeks. The shock chlorine removes chloramines (used chlorine) and other impurities. It is also very good to drain some water from time to time and top up with new "dilution water".

Bromine: Can be used if you have chlorine allergies. A little more expensive than chlorine but very effective compared to other chlorine-free chemicals. The advantage of Bromine is also that it provides the same disinfection regardless of pH value.

NEVER mix different chemicals in a smaller container. No problem when mixed with a few cubic metres of water in your spa. Granules, powdered chemicals, can be dissolved in a bucket of warm water before being poured into the spa.

Duscha nougat. It is estimated that you add 200 times more dirt and bacteria to the bath if you jump in unshowered. This uses more chlorine and clogs all types of filters. Soap and surfactants from detergents are important to rinse off properly. If you fail, you will probably get a white foam that can be difficult to get rid of. There are chemicals for this to spray on.

Cleaning-free spa filters are by far the most user-friendly. Who wants to stand in the middle of winter and wash spa filters? These filters also provide clearer bathing water, as they remove smaller particles. No chemicals need to be purchased for filter washing. If you use one filter, it lasts about 3 months and if you use two filters at the same time, the consumption time during normal family bathing is 6 months. This means that a year's supply of filters, (Order 4 - Belala for 3), costs only SEK 1380 for our best-selling filters.

NOTE - do not use oil-based sponges and never use flocculants that clog these filters. Clarifiers are not needed as Cleanerless filters remove particles down to 1-5 microns in comparison to traditional washable filters that new down to 20 microns.

Regular water changes. You should change the water in the spa 3-4 times a year and always clean the pipework at the same time. You start by dosing in the recommended amount "Pipe Cleaner" into the existing bath water. Switch on the jets and run the whole system for about 10 minutes before draining the old bath water. Take the water hose and put it against the nozzles to rinse out some extra dirt. There are ways to clean and polish the inside of the bath itself. Add fresh water, adjust the pH and shock-chlorinate. You now have a new healthy bath water to enjoy.

Tip 1: If you intend to change the filters at the same time, it may be a good idea to rinse the old filters and use them for the first 24 hours. Otherwise, you risk clogging the new filters with residues from the pipes and the biofilm from the fresh water.

Tip 2: At the same time, take the opportunity to clean the vinyl side of the spa cover, but remember to rinse off any soap residue so that it doesn't get into the spa because then you really get a bubble bath. Spray on Vinyl protection 303 the cover will have a longer lifespan.

Shock chlorination

Delphin Oxi Booster. A good mix of Chock chlorine and oxygen.
Use Oxi Booster once and shock-chlorinate instead of Sunwac 12 after 2-3 weeks.
This type burns off chloramines (bound chlorine we don't want in our bathing water) and other types of pollution.

Water balance
Ideal pH value: 7.0 - 7.4

Set the pH value to be within the ideal range of 7.0 - 7.4 as this affects all factors of the water. A too high pH value causes skin and eye problems and limescale deposits, a too low pH value causes corrosion of metallic parts.

Spa pH minus: Dosage and use: If the pH value of the spa water is above 7.4, it must be lowered. 15 g (approx. 2 teaspoons) lowers the pH value in 1000 litres of water by approx. 0.2 units. Hard water needs more, soft water less Spa pH Minus. Reduce the value in small steps and check the value from time to time after about 30 minutes using the test kit. First dissolve Spa pH Minus in a bucket of water. Then slowly pour in the water along the edge of the tub. Do not add near metal parts. Do not use the same teaspoon for food.

Spa pH Plus: Dosage and use: If the pH value of the spa water is below 7.0, it must be raised. 15 g (approx. 2 teaspoons) raises the pH value in 1000 litres of water by approx. 0.2 units. Hard water needs less Spa pH Plus, soft water more Spa pH Plus. Increase the value in small steps and check the value occasionally after about 30 minutes using a test kit. First dissolve Spa pH Plus in a bucket of water. Then slowly pour in the water along the edge of the tub. Do not add near metal parts. Do not use the same teaspoon for food.

Note: A strongly fluctuating pH value, which leads to problems when adjusting the pH value, may be due to a too low alkalinity. See below.

Ideal alkalinity value: 80 - 120 mg/l (ppm)

Spa Alka UP

Especially in spa baths, it is difficult to adjust the pH value. The pH value often varies very strongly when a pH correcting agent is added. Most of the time, a too low alkalinity value is the cause of the large variations in the pH value. By increasing the alkalinity with Spa Alkalinity Up, the pH value is stabilised, which makes it easier to adjust the pH value. The optimal alkalinity value is between 80 - 120 ppm.

Ideal hardness: 150 - 250 mg/l (ppm)

Spa Hardness Up: To make your water more gentle on both you and the spa components, add Spa Hardness Up. With the right water hardness, you will have an optimal bathing experience. Dosage: To increase the hardness by 10 ppm, add 10 grams of Spa Hardness Up per 1000 litres of water. Distribute the indicated amount of Spa Hardness Up in the water. Test the hardness after 30 minutes. If necessary, dose again

Disinfection with chlorine
Best and cheapest way for safe, bacteria-free water

In a chlorine-based disinfection, the chlorine content should always be in the range of 1.0 - 3.0 mg/l (ppm). Here, Spa Klor or Spa Quick Tabs 20g are used. Spa Klor Tabs 20g are ideal for spas that are not in regular use (maintains some disinfection for a longer period of time in the spa).
Shock chlorination is always carried out when the water is refilled or changed. Shock chlorination is also carried out if the water becomes cloudy, coloured, foamy or smells. Shock chlorination means adding a higher dose of chlorine. This results in a more thorough cleaning.
It is necessary to regularly ensure that no dirt or microorganisms build up in the water. Note that disinfection always follows the testing and setting of the pH value. If the pH is wrong, the chlorine agent will not work.

The chlorine value must not exceed the recommended range. If the test results show that the chlorine level is too high, there are three options. The quickest and easiest way to lower the value is to add DELPHIN Antichlorine, which removes excess chlorine from the water. Alternatively, the water or part of the water can be replaced. The third option is to wait. In this case, the value should only be slightly above the recommended level and the pool should of course not be used until the chlorine level has gone down.

Ideal chlorine value: 1.0 - 3.0 mg/l (ppm)

Spa Chlorine (granular type powder)

Dosage: For shock chlorination / after water change: add 2-3 tsp per 1000 litres of water. After bathing: Chlorinate with the following dosage: 1 tsp per person per hour and 1000 litres of water. Wait 6 hours before bathing after shock chlorination, measure the chlorine level to be sure.

If the spa is not used for a while: add 3-6 tsp per week (if you are travelling for a longer period: use Spa Chlorine Tabs 20g or Spa Bromine Tabs 20g in a dosing float).

Use: First dissolve the Spa Chlorine in a bucket of water. Then slowly pour the solution into the water along the edge of the spa.
Do not use the same teaspoon for food

Spa Quick Tabs (20 gr)

To make your water more gentle on both you and the components in your spa, add Spa Hardness Up.

If necessary, dose again.

Spa Chlorine Tabs

Dosage: For long-term disinfection: add 1 - 5 tablets to a dosing float (Spa chlorine/bromine dosing float), adjust the opening of the float so that enough water flows into it to release enough chlorine into the water until the desired values are reached. The dosing float is filled with new tablets as needed. Always remove the float when bathing. In addition to long-term disinfection, a shock treatment with Spa Chlorine should be carried out regularly and at least every two weeks.

Disinfection with bromine
The Alternative to Chlorine if the family is sensitive to chlorine

Bromine is another disinfection option. Spa BromTabs 20g also have a high disinfection power and are odourless. Like active oxygen, Spa Brom Tabs 20g are used in combination with Spa Algifix. In addition to a basic disinfection with bromine, a shock treatment should be carried out every two weeks with Spa Shock or Spa Klor

Ideal bromine value: 2.0 - 3.0 mg/l (ppm)

Spa Brom Tabs (20 gr)

Dosage: For long-term disinfection: add 1 - 5 tablets to a dosing float (Spa chlorine/bromine dosing float), set the opening in the float so that enough water flows into it to release enough bromine into the water until the desired values are reached. The dosing float is filled with new tablets as needed. Always remove the float when bathing. In addition to the long-term disinfection, a shock treatment with Spa Shock or Spa Chlorine should be carried out regularly and at least every two weeks.

Disinfection with Active Acid
Suitable for wooden hot tubs

We recommend using products with active oxygen as a base in combination with an activator. Spa Shock or Spa Shock Tabs 20g together with Spa Shock Support (algae killer). In addition to a basic disinfection with active oxygen, a shock treatment with Spa Chlorine should be carried out every two weeks.

Ideal active oxygen (O2) value: 5.0 - 8.0 mg/l, (2 hours after dosing).

Spa Shock Tabs (20 gr)

Dosage: When refilling or converting to an active oxygen system, dose 1 tablet of Spa Shock per 1000 litres of water. After each use of the spa, add 1 tablet of Spa Shock per 1000 litres of water. Approximately 6 hours after a shock treatment, you can use the spa again. For continuous disinfection when not in use, dose 1 - 2 tablets per week per 1000 litres of water.

Use: First dissolve the Spa Shock Tabs 20g in a bucket of water. Then slowly pour in along the edge of the tub.

Spa Quick Tabs (20 gr)

To make your water more gentle on both you and the components in your spa, add Spa Hardness Up.

If necessary, dose again.

Spa Shock Support (Algaecide)

In order to guarantee hygienically safe water quality, it is essential to keep your spa free of algae. Spa Algifix inhibits the formation of algae. Spa Algifix is used in combination with Spa Shock and Spa Brom Tabs 20g. It acts as an activator and significantly increases the effectiveness of disinfection.

Dosage: When refilling, add 30 ml per 1000 litres of spa water. For replenishment, add 20 ml per 1000 litres of bath water every 14 days. Use: Slowly pour Spa Algifix into the water along the edge of the tub.

Cleaning Spa Filters and Pipework

Spa Filter Cleaner, cleaning cartridge filter (lamella filter)

Skin and oil residues, lime, organic particles and other dirt get stuck in the filter. By cleaning the filter regularly with Spa Filter Cleaner, you increase the conditions for an optimal water quality.

Approach

Remove the filter from the filter housing and spray on Spa Filter Cleaner from top to bottom. Leave Spa Filter Cleaner to work for at least 5 minutes. When the foam has settled, rinse the filter thoroughly with a strong jet of water.

A spa filter should be cleaned at least once or twice a month and replaced after a maximum of 12 months.

Please note that disposable filter should not be cleaned but replaced after 3 months of normal bathing.

Delphin Spa Pipe Cleaner, Cleaning of the spa's pipe system

It is important to clean the piping system in the spa 3-4 times a year.

The pipework in hot tubs needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent bacterial growth in the coating that forms in the pipes. Legionella bacteria are particularly dangerous. The coating in the pipework also impairs the functioning of the spa.

Dosage
Clean the pipes every time the water is changed after 3 to 4 months. The spa should be completely filled with water. Add 0.5 litres of Spa Pipe Cleaner per 1000 litres of spa water in the wide drain, removing the filter if possible. Run the water system for 10-15 minutes. Then switch off, drain the water and rinse the spa, flushing into the jets if possible.

For fresh water: shock treatment with Spa Chlorine or Spa Shock.

Test strips:

Avoid touching the test part of the test stick. Dip the test stick quickly into the water about 30 cm below the surface. Hold the stick in the water for about 10 seconds. Do not shake the water off the test stick. Wait 15 seconds and then compare the colour values of the test stick with the colour scale on the label. Seal the jar immediately after removing the test stick.

Note: At an alkalinity value below 80 mg/l, the colour comparison may show a too low pH value. In this case, first adjust the alkalinity with Spa Alkalinity Up and then retest the water values.
